The 82nd Airborne Division had to be used in the invasion of Normandy at the beginning of June 1944, but Lieutenant General Clark, didn’t want to give up the division. During the last few weeks of fighting in Italy on the Winterline, the 504th, reinforced with the 376th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion and 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion to create the 504th Parachute Regimental Combat Team, fought in the difficult terrain of Mount Sammucro and the Winter Line area.
